Personal Branding in a 2.5 world

Personal Branding, Social Media
Marty Neumier wrote a wonderful branding book that is fresh and relevant. The Brand Gap: Expanded Edition In the book he says: “A brand is a person’s gut feeling about a product, service or organization.” Google vs Coca Cola Google has done very little advertising. They rely on the interactions and the positive environment created to generate the power of their brand. Coca Cola has used advertising as a key element of brand distinction and growth. Things have changed. We are the Brands Influential Individuals are not only brands anymore. Everyone is a brand! Social media has created micro-celebrity. Everyone has influence. The difference is this influence and chatter has become more organic. Many people contributing to an overall consensus of a niche network is the driving factor of WOM.…

Time and growth of social media is non-linear!

Social Media
If you're a small business or an individual focused on building and maintaining a personal brand there is one aspect of business and social media that I want you to take away from my blog. Time and growth of social media is non-linear! You’ll need someone who can recognize the inflection point. With the ups and downs of social media participation the inflection point is where your involvement peaks. This process is non-linear and difficult to anticipate. The failure to see the inflection point of social media growth leads to one thing.. Death. If you’re young in social media this failure can kill current client retention and lead opportunities. It’s really hard as a business to expand into a new environment when day to day operational transactions are all consuming.…

Fresno’s Growing Trend – Fan Pages

Social Media
When I present to organizations or events I recommend every business have a Facebook fan page.  Integrating that Fan Page with current marketing out posts can get tricky because the domain name is long and ugly. When you first create a Fan page the URL looks like: –http://www.facebook.com/pages/Personal-Branding-Social-Media-Strategy/116212446792?ref=nf. This looks real nice on a brochure or in your email signature doesn’t it? Consider the clean option. What if we can clean up this URL and have it look like -http://www.facebook.com/YourSocialMedia? There is! All you need is 25 fans.  Once you have 25 fans, you can get a vanity URL… if it’s available. This is a race and maybe you didn’t realize that you’re already behind. Once you create the business Fan Page, invite your friends and other people who would…

Growing your business with Social Media

Personal Branding, Social Media
A lot of what I typically talk about is directed at people whom may not know what twitter is all about. So lets set the stage. Twitter grew by 900+ something percent just last year. (2009) But where I see trouble is in the integration of these tools for small regional businesses. Just because something is out there as a tool doesn’t mean it’s right for you. In my opinion understanding the trends and what opportunities are available is the first step to aligning social media to your organizations objectives. Obviously the big thing about social media is the opportunity to listen. Listening to what people are talking about will empower your business and help you figure out who your target market is and what drives them. Why people are…

Valuable Tools for Social Media Success

Social Media
If you're involved with Twitter in any way, you've probably heard about some or all of the tools that I’m going to  mention. If you're not exactly sure what one or all are and how they impact your twitter efforts, then this list will be very helpful. The use of tools can be rather technical because of some advanced features, but at least here is a list that will point you in the right direction. Twitter can be considered advanced compared to Facebook, so practice and learn the tools. Twitter is a different kind of animal that takes the right tools in order to be successful. If you have found success with other tools, great, feel free to share what tools work with a comment. Social Media Tools Used for…

Job Hunting with or without a Personal Brand

Social Media
The Class of 2009 has spent the months after graduation looking for a job. 40,000 of this year’s graduates are hunting (via http://www.guardian.co.uk/). What happens next? Are you fully prepared? Finally, the day has arrived. You’ve landed an interview with a wonderful company doing what you love to do. First you put on your best business attire and get into the car. You’re the definition of a professional. The car ride to the interview is important, so you listen to music that pumps you up or some that calms you down. As you pull up to the building your excitement increases. You walk into the lobby and address the receptionist. I have an interview with “person who can change my life” or more commonly known as Ms. Boss. The interview…

Fresno’s Facebook & Twitter highlighted in article

Social Media
Too long for status post- :) Today in the Fresno Bee - Social Media has been gaining in popularity concerning published articles. Meaning, traditional media is writing about thus increasing the hype to social media, the defined cause of newspaper decline. Surprisingly, the article highlights two companies “successfully” using social media as a blow horn in an attempt to attract more customers. The article also stresses that social media is free Advertising. Yes it is free, but…..   To all my friends understand social media is a conversation, even if you’re using the company logo as your profile/username. In the beginning, you will find support only from your current supporters, but if you are attempting to grow and find new audiences the only steps that matter are the conversation…

Blue pill, or Red Pill of Social Media

Internet, Personal Branding, Social Media, Web 2.0
"You take the blue pill, the story ends; you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes." The majority of people are just batteries for the social media environment just feeding it so it can exist. The question of which pill, red or blue, is asking us if we should head into the social media direction, where the truth will change our business and our lives and ultimately decide this direction is worth pursuing or choose ignorance and bliss. The blue pill will leave us as we are, in a life consisting of habit, transactional requirements, and a business environment we believe we know. In this state…
